This book provides parents with a firm and respectful approach to child guidance and discipline that is clear, systematic, and developmentally appropriate for children of all ages and temperaments, one that has been tested and used successfully by hundreds of thousands of parents and teachers. In the early chapters, parents discover their limit-setting styles, why limits are so important in the teaching-and-learning process, how children really learn our rules, and the "family dances" parents do in their ineffective attempts to get their children to cooperate. The middle chapters form the core of the skills-training program. Parents discover how to give a clear limit-setting message, how to stop family dances and power struggles before they begin, how to inspire children's cooperation and teach problem-solving skills, and  proven methods for stopping misbehavior in its tracks with natural and logical consequences. The final chapters are devoted to helping parents solve problems with chores and homework and support children with hyperactivity and inattention.
